Last month, Google, at its second Project Ara Module Developers Conference released the first working prototype of Project ARA-The Spiral 2
Spiral 2 comes with a HD (720×1280 pixels) screen, choice of Nvidia Tegra K1 or Marvel PX1928 processor, 5-megapixel primary camera, Micro-USB port, battery, speaker and connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and 3G. It also has support for hotswapping modules and significant improvements such as its ability to withstand drops. Google currently has 11 working modules and plans to bring this number up to 30 by the end of this year
In the initial phase the device will be available in Puerto Rico through two Puerto Rico-based carriers, OpenMobile and Claro, and will be sold through “food truck” style stores. The cost will vary based on the number and type of modules a user chooses and may fall in between $50-$100.
On the downside….Google reported that there won’t be 3D printing of modules ( at least initially as it’s not quite up to the mark yet). But they are using dye-sublimation printed blocks which look great with matte finish and bright colors.

The spiral 2 is using physical pins…so you have to slide the modules inside which means you can’t just place it in the slots directly and adjust it with your fingers, hopefully, the spiral 3 will come with electro-permanent magnets. Moreover there’s no front facing camera. You could have modules housing the light sensor and front camera that can be interchanged with the speaker but that’s something you don’t want to do while receiving a video call.
The 5 megapixel camera and the 720p display does not provide the spiral 2 with the status of a flagship phone….especially with the features and improvements that we have seen in the recently released phones.
Also Google is still working on the hardware and software associated with the hot swapping and interchangeability of the modules
lets wait for it
